CURRENT STANDINGS

The 2018 KOTI series started out slow, with only a few races held in the first few race days due to light winds. After the initial lull, the final stretch of race days were prime conditions for racing and produced some very close finishes. Here are the final results from the 2018 King of the Island races...

Hobie 16 Class

1st Place - Henry Beckum - 81.13 pts

2nd Place - Freddy Stroud - 70.59 pts

3rd Place - Malcolm Wright - 35.37 pts

Open Class

1st Place - Ted Boyd - 75.00 pts

2nd Place - Jeff Betts - 73.08 pts

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make these races happen.

The slate has been wiped clean and the September Series is right around the corner! We'll use the same format we use for KOTI to score this 3 day race series. Get your boats ready and come join the fun!

CURRENT STANDINGS

We had a great day of racing on Aug 4th, completing 5 races while landing on 4 different beaches, and the 2018 KOTI is up for grabs with only one day of racing left to determine this year’s winner! We had 3 new boats join the Hobie 16 fleet this week and each of them sailed in all 5 races, which puts them 2 races out of qualifying. If we get 4 races in on Aug 18th, and they compete in all 4, they will have sailed in enough to qualify (1/2 +1).  Here's where we are currently...

HOBIE 16 CLASS

1st - 81.13 - Henry Beckum

2nd - 70.59 - Freddy Stroud

3rd - 35.29 - Malcolm Wright

* - 78.13 - Pete Joris (2 races behind)

* - 75.86 - Andy Kohler (2 races behind)

* - 72.41 - Todd Hendrix (2 races behind)

* - 44.83 - Phil Legere (2 races behind)

OPEN CLASS

1st - 77.78 - Ted Boyd

2nd - 70.00 - Jeff Betts

Come join us for the final KOTI race (even if you aren't competing for the podium) and stay tuned for details on the 2018 September Series!

MESSAGE FROM JEFF BETTS

We've had two really light wind days for racing so far, but at least the winds have been W and S so the seas have been very lake-like. However, the current proves to be a big part of the equation when making tactical decisions on the course.

By the time we got everyone and everything situated on the beach and marks on the water for Day 1, we had time for a long drift race and were within 20 seconds of the start of race 2 when someone pointed out that the By-Air Package boat had been de-masted just east of the starting line, and a flash of lightning was seen near Sea Island where a huge storm had been building. We cancelled the second race and Dave Wallace took his crew (his daughter) and Ted Boyd out to assist while the rest headed for cover.

The racing on Day 2 was about the same as we had for Day 1. We thought things were building for race 2 and planned for a 2-lap race when halfway up the first leg of the course the breeze dropped to almost nothing.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and we can get off to a quick start tomorrow and get some good racing in.
